About / Apr08 / Furlong edits Psychology in the Schools

April 29, 2008
For immediate release

Michael Furlong of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School co-edits issue of Psychology in the Schools focused on Student Engagement

Dr. Michael Furlong of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School co-edited with Sandy Christenson of the University of Minnesota the Volume 45, Issue 5 (May 2008) edition of Psychology in the Schools focusing on Student Engagement. In their introduction to the volume Furlong and Christenson write, “It is hoped that the manuscripts and the reaction by Dr. Larry Kortering will advance our knowledge of the construct of student engagement, scholarly inquiry of the impact of student engagement on outcomes for all students, and understanding of the construct as a helpful heuristic for intervention practices. We contend that paying attention to alterable functional risk factors – the identifiers and early warning signs of disengagement, as well as the facilitators of engagement – provides a framework from which to create assessment-to intervention links to enhance all students’ connections in the school environment.”

The volume also contains publications by other members of the Gevirtz School’s Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (CCSP), which Furlong chairs. Along with Christenson and James J. Appleton, Furlong co-authored “Student engagement with school: Critical conceptual and methodological issues of the construct.” Jill D. Sharkey, Sukkyung You, and Katrina Schnoebelen, all of CCSP, wrote “Relations among school assets, individual resilience, and student engagement for youth grouped by level of family functioning.” The CCSP research team of Sukkyung You, Michael J. Furlong, Erika Felix, Jill D. Sharkey, Diane Tanigawa, and Jennifer Greif Green wrote “Relations among school connectedness, hope, life satisfaction, and bully victimization.”

The entire issue may be found on line.

Furlong is a co-editor of the Handbook of School Violence and School Ssafety: From Research to Practice. He previously served as the president of the California Association of School Psychologists, is an advisory panel member for the California Healthy KIDS Survey project, and is the incoming Editor of the Journal of School Violence.
