The Teacher Education Program at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at UC Santa Barbara has named its 2008 Vivian Guerrier Hope Fellows: Clint Dawson, Yolanda Perez, Jorge Vilchez, and Adam Weiss. The four current student teacher candidates will receive awards of $750 each.
The Hope Scholarships honor Vivian Guerrier, who passed away in 2007 after more than a decade of service to the GGSE and Credential students. This annual scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate the sense of personal courage and hope that Vivian Guerrier embodied as a stalwart member of the Gevirtz School community.
Tine Sloan, Acting Director of the Teacher Education Program, says, “I read many scholarship applications but the stories these candidates submitted left me with an overwhelming sense that I was privy to something larger. All of them told humbling stories of courage and of building strength from adversity, and from that strength they generated hope for themselves and for the students they wish to serve. I am thankful the Hope Scholarship is investing in them because I have no doubt these individuals will change the world.”
