Caren Converse of the Gevirtz School at UC Santa Barbara received her Ph.D. from the Department of Education on Sunday, June 13. What makes her doctorate even more noteworthy is that Caren and her son Ben Converse boarded a flight in Chicago at 6 a.m. that morning to get to California in time for her graduation ceremony. Why the last second rush? Because Ben received his Ph.D. in the University of Chicago graduation ceremony held the previous day, Saturday, June 12.
Caren’s degree is in Language, Literacy, and Composition, while Ben’s is in Business (decision making). Caren had been a high school English teacher in upstate New York and had always desired to go back to get her Ph.D. once her children had grown (a second son edits and lives in Studio City, CA).
“It’s hard to describe the feelings,” Caren says. “I’m incredibly thrilled for my son who will be an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, and for myself for accomplishing something I've always dreamed of. It’s that simple.”
