Madeeha bint Ahmed bin Nassir al Shibaniyah, who earned her Ph.D. in the Department of Education at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, was named the Minister of Education of Oman on February 27. Al Shibaniyah is the State of Oman’s first woman Minister of Education and the first woman in the Arabian peninsula to be named a minister of education. Her appointment is part of the reforms offered in response to unrest in Oman by its Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
Al Shibaniyah earned her Ph.D. in 2005 in the Department of Education’s Teaching and Learning emphasis. Her doctoral advisor was Professor Jenny Cook-Gumperz.
