Hsiu-Zu Ho of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School shows her mixed media art at the UCSB Faculty Club, donates portion of sales to student fellowships
Dr. Hsiu-Zu Ho of the Gevirtz School at UC Santa Barbara will have the one-artist show Honor on display at the UC Santa Barbara Faculty Club from November 14 through December 21, 2007. The exhibit of mixed media is a commemoration of the 100th birthday of Professor Ho’s father, Kai-Chia Ho, MD (1907-2001), and is a tribute to his lifelong dedication to education. In honor of Dr. Kai-Chia Ho, 30% of all proceeds will be donated to the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Graduate Fellowships. A reception will be held on Friday, November 16, 5-7 pm at the Faculty Club with a special tribute for Dr. Kai-Chia Ho beginning at 5:30 pm.

When Dr. Ho was a child a fortuneteller once told her mother that she would be a scientist and an artist. Ho pursued her interest in art as a hobby and form of therapy. She is an award-winning artist and is a member of local art associations in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Malibu."Art is a way for me to make meaning of the connections in the life force — past, present, and future ; it is a way for me to express my reverance for nature — its order, its magic," she says. "I attempt in this show to capture the spirit and energy of the Asian elements in the world that my father and I share." Ho's mixed media work combines watercolor, oil pastel, and gouache with a variety of found objects and papers that reflect that her culture and experience.
Professor Ho is a member of the Cultural Perspectives and Comparative Education, Research Methodology, and Early Childhood and Adolescent Development emphases in the Department of Education. Her research interests include cultural and gender variations in child development; motivation and academic achievement; and parental involvement.
Dr. Hsiu-Zu Ho received her B.S. degree from Purdue University with a major in mathematics and minors in biology and psychology. Integrating interests in these three academic domains, she pursued graduate training in behavioral genetics from the Institute of Behavioral Genetics, University of Colorado and received a Ph.D. in Psychology. From there Ho received postdoctoral training in quantitative genetic models at the Population Genetics Laboratory, University of Hawaii. She then joined the Psychology department at UCSB as a faculty member conducting research in developmental behavioral genetics in the areas of reading disability, spatial cognition, and gender-related issues in cognitive development. The combination of her academic interest in examining the etiology of individual differences and her personal bicultural experience has led her to investigate the role of culture in development. Ho’s breadth of academic interests led her to join the faculty of the Education Department at UCSB in the summer of 1995.
