Robert and Lynn Koegel of UC Santa Barbara’s Koegel Autism Center to receive Autism Speaks award at the star-studded Acts of Love reception

 

Robert and Lynn Koegel of the Koegel Autism Center and Eli & Edythe L. Broad Asperger Center at UC Santa Barbara will receive an award for their work in the science/research field from Autism Speaks at the seventh annual star-studded Acts of Love reception on Saturday, October 3. Autism Speaks hails the Koegels as “remarkable champions” for their work and they will be honored as part of Acts of Love 2009, a one-night only awards reception to celebrate those who have made a difference in the Autism Community. Acts of Love – a literary and musical celebration – features an ensemble cast performing an array of readings and quotes. Through ticket sales, sponsorship, and donations, the event is projected to raise more than $100,000 for autism research and treatment.

Dr. Robert Koegel has focused his career in the area of autism, specializing in language intervention, family support, and school integration. He has published over two hundred articles and papers relating to the treatment of autism. Robert Koegel also teaches courses in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology and in the Special Education, Disabilities and Risk Studies Emphasis in the Department of Education at the Gevirtz School at UCSB. Dr. Lynn Kern Koegel is the Clinical Director of Autism Services in the UCSB Autism Research Center and the Director of the Eli & Edythe L. Broad Center for Asperger’s Research. The Koegels are the developers of Pivotal Response Treatment, which focuses on motivation.

Acts of Love will feature numerous luminaries from film and television. Those scheduled to appear include: Adam Arkin (“Hitch,” “Chicago Hope”), Austin Butler (“Aliens in the Attic”), Michael Chiklis (“Fantastic Four,” “The Shield”), Gary Cole (“Office Space,” “Entourage”), Michaela Conlin (“Bones,” “Enchanted”), Carla Gugino (“Watchmen,” “American Gangster”), John Heard (“Home Alone,” “Prison Break”), Mary McDonnell (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Donnie Darko”), Debra Messing (“Will & Grace,” “The Starter Wife”), Alfred Molina (“Spider Man 2,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark”), CCH Pounder (“The Shield,” “Orphan”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia,” “Jennifer's Body”), Lynn Whitfield (“The Josephine Baker Story,” “Eve's Bayou”), and Keith David (“Crash,” “The Princess and the Frog”).
           
Acts of Love takes place on October 3rd at the Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at Santa Monica City College. VIP & Celebrity Pre-Show Reception begins at 5 pm. Doors open for VIP and Special Guest Red Carpet Pre-show Reception at 6 pm. At 7 pm the doors open to theater for General Admission. At 7:30 pm the Acts of Love performance and Awards Presentation is scheduled. Information about tickets is available on line.
