Innovate, Inspire, Imagine
The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at UC Santa Barbara is home to faculty, students, and staff who all care deeply about developing themselves and others as leaders in educational and psychological research, practice, and leadership. We are committed to increasing access to excellent opportunities for the diverse children, families, and citizens of California. Our local and regional partnerships have attracted national and international attention.
We have been educating teachers for nearly 100 years, since UCSB started as a state teacher’s college in 1909. The University is now a world-class research institution, and the scholars and students of the Gevirtz School play a significant part in UCSB’s international reputation for educational excellence. The Gevirtz School has earned a position among the nation’s top 50 graduate schools of education according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings.
The Gevirtz School has always had the goal of ensuring that California’s children receive the best education possible. We prepare teachers, educational researchers, psychologists, and school leaders who are committed to improving public education — and thus every child’s experience in the classroom and beyond— through research and collaboration.
Faculty and students are engaged in research that generates knowledge, advances teaching and learning, and influences education practice and public policy. We work in partnership with educational institutions and community organizations to address issues of critical local and national concern. These collaborations provide venues for our faculty and graduate students to work with practitioners in the field to gain insights and direct experience in the day-to-day business of Pre-kindergarten to higher education settings and mental health and other community agencies.
All our graduate students are educated to be leaders in their chosen fields. A great strength of our programs lies in the supportive relationships established between faculty and students. Faculty understand the importance of mentoring students, who benefit from close working relationships that begin when they enter the Gevirtz School and extend through graduation and often beyond, developing into ongoing, career-long commitments to each other.
Our vision is that the Gevirtz School will continue to expand as a place where ideas grow and mature, where the best minds can enter into dialogue, where imagination and creativity are valued, and where research and practice interact to create innovation and inspiration.
