Dorothy Chun

Professor, Ph.D. (University of California, Berkeley)

Emphasis:
Cultural Perspectives & Comparative Education, Teaching & Learning

Research Interests:
Second language acquisition, intonation (the melody and rhythm of language), computer-mediated communication for language learning, and learning and teaching with digital media

Biography:
Although my Ph.D. from UC Berkeley is in historical Germanic linguistics, I have been exploring the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics ever since. My passions are the exploration of how second languages are learned and research on the use of technology to enhance the learning of language and culture. I am particularly interested in how we learn the rhythm and melody of languages other than our native language, the cognitive processes involved in reading a foreign language, and how we can further intercultural understanding through online exchanges with partners abroad. I was recently involved in an interdisciplinary project supported by a Mellon grant to study how technology can be used to promote learning in college classrooms in a variety of subjects.
