Biography:
I received my B.A. from Beloit College and my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arkansas. I completed my internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Following my post-doc, I stayed at MGH for two years where I served as Director of Consultation Neuropsychology and as a staff psychologist in the department of Child Psychiatry. Seeking more time for research, I joined the faculty of UCSB in July of 2004.
As a clinical scientist, I enjoy the active synergy between clinical work and research. I seek to conduct research that is clinically informative and will aid treatment and assessment, particularly with children and adolescents. Generally speaking, my research focuses on two broad and overlapping areas: clinical assessment and psychotherapy process and outcomes. I've published a number of papers on behavioral and traditional personality assessment, with an emphasis on projective techniques. My current work seeks to understand the relationship between neuropsychological and personality assessment and how these different techniques can be effectively used together to best inform diagnosis and treatment. I direct the Psychology Assessment Center, a clinical research center that provides neuropsychological and personality assessment services to area children and adults. The Center serves as a research and clinical base from which to explore the psychometric correlates of various clinical disorders, both neurocognitive and psychological. For more information on my current projects, please see my personal webpage.
My other research interests lie in psychotherapy process and outcomes. While my clinical orientation is rooted in a psychodynamic (interpersonal) model, my technique is firmly integrative and draws from CBT, behavior therapy, and family systems. I plan to systematize and teach this flexible and integrated model while also exploring psychotherapy process variables and behavioral, affective, and interpersonal outcomes for child and adolescent clients.
