Tania Israel

Associate Professor, Ph.D. (Arizona State University)

Emphasis:
Counseling Psychology

Research Interests:
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT); Gender; Counseling/Psychotherapy; Mental health services

Biography:
I joined the faculty at UCSB in 2000 after teaching Counseling Psychology for two years at the University of Memphis. I completed my doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Arizona State University in 1998 where I taught Women's Studies from 1994-1997. My masters degree in Human Sexuality Education and B.A. in Women's Studies and Psychology are from the University of Pennsylvania.

Much of my current research investigates the impact of counselor, client, and contextual variables on the processes and outcomes of therapy with LGBT clients. I have additional research teams on gender issues/feminist psychology and evaluation of health education interventions.

Most of my courses are offered within the Department of Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology, including theories of counseling, counseling LGBT clients, and counseling strategies for optimal lifespan functioning. In addition, I have taught undergraduate courses through freshman seminars, independent research, and the minor in Education and Applied Psychology.
