Project Dates: 10/01/2006 – 06/30/2009

Abstract:

Two program sites are involved in the implementation. They include an after school computer club known as Club Proteo located at the Goleta Boys and Girls Club and a site known as the Parents, Children and Computers Project (IV-PCCP) at Isla Vista School in the community of Isla Vista. Club Proteo, which has been in operation for over ten years, features children using computer software and playing board games to foster the acquisition of important cognitive competencies in literacy, vocabulary development and mathematical problem solving. The IV-PCCP, which has been in operation for five years, primarily serves Spanish-speaking immigrant families from the surrounding community with children attending Isla Vista School. The IV-PCCP project helps familiarize parents with the use of computers in collaboration with activities for children.

Undergraduate students will come from Education 124 “Research on Teaching and Learning in Sociocultural Contexts”, a 4-unit course that is offered for a grade every academic quarter by the Education Department within the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. Enrollment is typically from 25 to 30 students.

Research and evaluation will look at Club Proteo will look at the development of new community activities and the use of educational games to develop student language and in particular vocabulary development. Parents at the IV-PCCP will be assessed for the development of computer skills. Undergraduates will take pre and post surveys each quarter.
