Project Dates: 07/01/2008 – 06/30/2009
Abstract:
This study examines the effectiveness of a substance abuse treatment program for perinatal women and their children. First Steps offers residential services to pregnant, postpartum, and parenting women and their minor children. First Steps’ case managers provide individual and group interventions to the women, connect them to needed social services, and conduct parent education and work training. The study examines the extent to which the program reduces substance abuse among the women; reduces their mental health problems, particularly those associated with prior trauma; strengthens their confidence and competence as parents through parenting skills training; and provides housing stability, life skills, education and vocational training. To date, participating women have reported significantly fewer trauma symptoms and significantly fewer alcohol and drug problems.
