Abstract:
Children’s life experiences are shaped by complex interactional contexts – family, school, community. In particular, Spanish-speaking children in the U.S. have an added dimension of complexity in terms of the bilingual nature of their experiences. While many studies provide important insights into isolated influences on language development, they often take only cross-sectional snapshots or and have not been able to provide a comprehensive investigation of the dynamic developmental context that influences Spanish speaking children’s language development in Spanish and English. Using the multilevel longitudinal data from 1418 Spanish-speaking students in Texas and California, the current study will explore the dynamics of longitudinal patterns of oral language development and the significant predictors associated with the development of 2 languages.
