Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership

Welcome from the Program Leader

Faverty

Welcome to the Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. The JDP is a regional venture between the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) to provide a doctoral program in the professional practice of leadership in education resulting in the award of an Ed.D degree.

The JDP was formed to meet the leadership needs of P-16 educational institutions in the Central California area of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties. Our focus is on the professional practice of leadership, whether for early childhood education, K-12, special education, or higher education.

Concurrently, high quality practice must be grounded on understanding the differing theories of leadership, educational leadership in particular. The joint faculty of the JDP universities brings together this symbiotic relationship of theory and practice, focused on the development of 21st Century skills.

The task of educational leadership requires vision, inspiration, and stamina. Nonetheless, success in a leadership role begins long before an individual takes charge. Many of leadership’s most critical skills are built in the educational process itself – in the classroom, in mentoring relationships, and in the company of other leaders and thinkers.

Tomorrow’s leaders will face great challenges in the mission of moving their educational organizations forward in a rapidly evolving world. They will experience a pace and a volume unknown to most of their predecessors. They will need more than natural ability.  They will need the benefit of training and development to garner the tools of this very critical institution called education.

Our mission in the JDP is to assist in the development of these critical leadership skill-sets. We hope you will join us on this important intellectual journey toward success as a true educational leader of the 21st Century.
