The Ed.D. Degree

Mission

The Ed.D.’s mission is to develop regional and distinctive capacity in educational leadership for Central California educational professionals in P-20 schools and educational organizations. The program is based on three fundamental beliefs:

  • Under appropriate instructional conditions, all students can learn
  • School organizations control these conditions of learning success
  • Educational leaders, at various levels and capacities, are accountable for these organizations

Program Features

The Ed.D. takes advantage of the unique strengths of UCSB to provide an innovative curricular, instructional, and research program that includes:

  • A focus on central coast educational institutions
  • An accelerated 3-year time to degree
  • A year-round operation, with annual summer sessions and fall and winter leadership Symposia
  • A cohort learning model for working professionals
  • In situ research in regional schools and educational organizations
  • An internationally, nationally, regionally renowned faculty

Students, as a cohort, spend their 1st year completing three core courses in educational leadership, policy, and organizations and three in research methodology. They spend their 2nd year completing a set of advanced doctoral seminars and practicums on information technology, policy and politics, learning organizations, organizational management, organizational development and financial leadership. While this coursework is underway, they also participate in leadership practicum experiences and in ongoing research projects in various central coast Professional Development practica crafting solutions to regional educational problems. Students spend their 3rd year completing coursework and researching and writing their dissertations.

Students

The Ed.D. admits 8-10 students per cohort and about 50 students in total. These students are practicing professionals, currently employed in leadership positions in P-20 school organizations or related educational agencies. All hold, at the time of their admission, a Master's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. They seek positions as: P-20 Central Office or School Site Leaders; Community College and Higher Education Administrators; County and State Educational Agents; Non-Profit Educational Leaders; and Public and Private Educational Consultants.
