Application Tips

Applying to graduate school can be a very stressful and confusing experience. The Student Affairs Office in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education strives to make the application process as clear and efficient as possible. After processing thousands of applications, we have compiled a list of application tips that may make the application process easier for you.

Tip #1

Apply Early!

Applying early gives you enough time to compensate for any application materials that may be missing. Many times applicants apply right at the deadline. By this time it will be too late to send in any missing materials, the deadline will have already passed. If the application is missing required materials, it will be considered incomplete.

Tip #2

Complete your application as soon as possible.

Only completed applications will be forwarded for faculty review. It is to your benefit to complete your application as soon as possible. You can do this by sending all required documents in one envelope. If possible, have official and sealed transcripts and letters of recommendations sent to you. You may then include them in the envelope with the rest of the application materials. By doing this, your application will not have to wait, incomplete, for your transcripts or letters to arrive. This will give you control over knowing when transcripts and letters are sent to the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. However, please be aware that transcripts and letters must be in sealed envelopes to be considered official.

Tip #3

Check your Application Status often.

You are able to continually check the status of your application through the supporting application materials section of your electronic application. Just login to your electronic application and look for the Supporting Application Materials section. Materials will be entered in as they arrive, so you can keep checking for materials that you are expecting. This section will also notify you of any missing materials. For more information on how to check the status of your application please see our Application Checklist. Even though we make every effort to keep you updated on the status, it is up to you to be responsible for ensuring that it is complete by checking on the status of the application.

Tip #4

Check your email.

The email that you provide to UCSB on your electronic application will be our primary means of contacting you. The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, UCSB Graduate Division and the UCSB Registrar may all use the email that you provide to send you information or to get in contact with you about any problems with your application. Do not provide an email that you do not check often.

Tip #5

Take a look at our Website.

Our website provides information on the programs of study that are offered, admissions information, answers to frequently asked questions, and other valuable information (including these tips!). Each department/program has an admission checklist which provides information about additional application requirements. In addition, the Student Affairs Office, provides the applicant with a checklist of UCSB requirements and includes a step by step process on how to apply.

Tip #6

You can assist us to process your application more efficiently by completing the following:

  • Staple materials! Especially your Statement of Purpose. We require two copies of your statement of purpose. If you are applying for a teaching credential, please follow the specific guidelines on how to write the Statement of Purpose. All other applicants should follow the directions for writing a Statement of Purpose as outlined on the Statement of Purpose Coversheet (all applicants are required to submit the coversheet).

  • If you have a previous name that is used on your transcripts than the name you applied under, please let us know! Send us a note in your application that your transcripts will be under a different name.
