California Teach is a University of California system-wide program to recruit, support, and prepare exceptional secondary science and mathematics teachers. The initiative began in response to both state and national concerns about the critical shortage of qualified science and mathematics teachers. Cal Teach combines quality undergraduate courses and classroom experience to prepare students to enter a teacher credential program, such as the Gevirtz School’s Teacher Education Program. An exciting new addition to Cal Teach, here at UC Santa Barbara, is the Minor in Science and Mathematics Education.
The experiences and resources of Cal Teach are offered to both UCSB undergraduates, including transfer students from regional community colleges. These talented UCSB students, along with support from mentor teachers, UCSB faculty, and donor partners, all contribute to the success of the Cal Teach program.
Students who have taken Cal Teach courses or successfully complete the Mathematics and Science Education minor are given preference for Noyce Teacher Scholar awards. These are $10,000 awards funded by the National Science Foundation. They are available for students seeking a secondary credential in mathematics or science who are willing to commit to two years of teaching in a high need school. In addition to the financial award, Noyce Teacher Scholars are offered regular enrichment activities and become part of a community of Noyce Teacher Scholars in California and the nation.
Students can apply for the Noyce Fellowships on-line; deadline for the application is March 1, 2011.
