Social deficits are considered a primary symptom of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This includes difficulties with pragmatics and social conversation, and can leave individuals with ASD at risk of loneliness and depression. Many individuals with HFA and Asperger’s Disorder display difficulty with nonverbal pragmatic behavior, particularly when discussing topics not related to their perseverative interests. The current study examines the effects of implementing a video self-management intervention to improve nonverbal pragmatic behavior during social conversation on topics other than perseverative interests. A multiple baseline research design was implemented. Results indicate that the intervention was associated with increased percentages of appropriate nonverbal pragmatic behavior, while maintaining or increasing on topic-responding during social conversation. Results generalized to other conversational partners.
