Past and Current Research Projects

The Psychotherapy Process for Adults with Learning Disabilities and Attention/Cognitive Disorders:

Examining differences in the therapeutic process for clients with learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) relative to clients who do not have these disabilities.

Cultural Empathy: Therapist Verbal Interventions and Asian American Client Ratings

The purpose of the study is to compare the effects of different therapist verbal interventions and level of client adherence to Asian cultural values on client ratings of therapist empathy.

Examining the Effects of Acculturation on Neuropsychological Test Performance

Examines the effects of Asian and Asian American culture and level of acculturation on one’s responses on self-report and performance-based personality measures. Additionally, participant’s performance on these measures are analyzed as a function of the examiner’s perceived race to see whether this factor plays a role in self-disclosure on a self-report personality inventory.

Rorschach Correlates of Trauma in Adults

Investigated the multi-method assessment of trauma psychopathology using the Rorschach and self- report measures.

Facilitating and Working with Client Affect in Psychotherapy: The Effect of Client Experience of Emotion on Session Process and Outcome

The purpose of the study is to compare the impact of an emotion-focused counseling session to a counseling session to a counseling session that does not focus on client affect. In particular, the study examines the effect of client expression of emotion on session outcome.

Additional past and current Hosford research projects have examined:

    • Psychometric properties of neuropsychological assessment measures
    • Neuropsychological correlates of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD
    • The effects of client expectation about counseling success
    • The experience of children who have been victims of bullying
    • Client views on termination caused by departure of clinician

    • Multicultural assessment
    • Validity scales on personality assessment
    • Cognitive organization and complexity of ethnic groups
    • Psychometrics of new tests
    • Utility and validity of new neuropsychological tests
    • Relationship between cognitive functioning, personality, and behavior
