Eudora 5.1 Settings for PC

June 4, 2007

Getting Started

Eudora is a powerful email program that must be configured to connect to your GGSE email account through your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Eudora works well with attachments and includes these features: checking multiple email accounts, filtering mail, addressbook, spell checking, and many more.

Secure and Encrypted Email (using SSL)

We are now supporting SSL (Secure Socket Layer) which allows for secure and encrypted emails as well as passwords that are sent securely. When using Eudora your emails and password are scrambled with encryption. This stops anyone from reading your passwords and email messages.

Download,Installation, and Initial setup of Eudora

1. You may download the newest version of Eudora from our software page listed here: http://www.education.ucsb.edu/itg/help/software/index.html

2. After downloading the compressed file you should see the installer file called Eudora51.exe.

You should double click on this to install Eudora. If you are updating Eudora then install the new version in the same folder as the previous version. Eudora is usually installed in either of these directories:

  • My Computer...C:...Eudora
  • My Computer...C:...Program Files...Qualcomm...Eudora

3. After successfully installing Eudora, open the program. It may give you a welcome window that explains the three modes of Eudora. Click OK.

4. If you see the New Account Wizard then click the Cancel button and go directly to advanced settings.

5. Go to the help menu...then to Payment and Registration. Click on the Light Mode button. Another window will pop up so then please click the reduce features button. The different modes of Eudora are described below. The Helpdesk recommends that you use Eudora in the light mode. The different modes of Eudora are described below.

Advertisement Mode

When you start Eudora it will tell you about the three modes that you have to choose from. IF you don’t mind the ads then you can use Eudora in the ad mode. It will display an advertisement in the corner.

Paid Mode

Do not select this mode because the advertised price of $50 is not Educational Priced. The real price is about $25.00 for the Full (Pro) Version. It has spell checking and other cool features. You may obtain a copy of Eudora from the UCSB Bookstore.

Light Mode

This is the recommended mode to use for Eudora. It is just like what you were using before with some added features and is FREE of cost. The GSE Helpdesk Recommends using this light mode.

Configuring the "Basic" Settings

These settings are the minimum necessary to use Eudora.

1. Go to the Tools menu...Options.

Getting Started

The Options settings window, pictured below, is where you will need to type in the appropriate settings. You should make sure that each window shown should match your own for most computers. Under the topic Getting Started enter the following.

Your Login Name is the first portion of your e-mail address. For example if your email address is john@education.ucsb.edu then your login would be john.

Checking Mail

Here you can change the frequency that Eudora will automatically check for email.

Incoming Mail

  1. Click the radio button (round circle) called IMAP
  2. Click Minimal headers only -more explanation below
  3. Click the radio button Mark it as deleted

New Mail Download Settings Explanation

Minimal Headers only: The program will first download part of the message and get the rest of the message only when you try to read the message.

Recommended: Computers that have a constant connection. Constant connection examples: Computer in your office at the GSE, Home computers that use DSL or Cable Modems.

Not recommended: for laptops or machines that use a dial-up modem connection because every time you try to read the message the computer will try to connect to the Internet to get the rest of the message.

Full Messages except attachments over ____K

This option will download all messages without the attachments. You may specify the size that you prefer to leave on the server to retrieve later. After reading the message, the attachment can be downloaded separately by clicking on the attachment icon within each message.

Recommended: for laptops or machines that use a dial-up modem connection because the full message will be download but the attachment will be left on the server to be download later. The computer will try to connect to the Internet to get the attachment when you try to open it.

Full Messages except attachments over 0 K

Eudora will function just as it did before. It will download the message and the attachment when you check for mail.

Recommended: for laptops or computers that are on the go and you want all of your messages accessible on demand.

Not Recommended: large amount of mail with large attachments will take a longer to download.

Sending Mail

Domain to add to... This setting allows you to send an email to a GSE email address, by only typing in their login name.Example: An email addressed to help will be sent to help@education.ucsb.edu

Immediate Send This setting is useful for writing up a large number of messages while off-line (without using a network connection) and then dialing up to the ISP to send all of the emails at once, instead of one at a time. If unchecked then each outgoing message will be queued up for sending at a later time. To send all queued messages go to the File menu and select Send Queued Messages.

An Example of this: I can stay off the Internet and type all new messages or replies and queue them for sending at a later time. Later on, I have access to a connection I dial-up and I can send all the messages I wrote earlier. This saves time connected to the Internet which can cost money and tie up a phone line.

Allow Authentication must be checked otherwise you will not be able to send email. This is so that the SMTP server (sending mail server) checks to be sure it is really you who is sending the message and not someone else. It is type of mail security.

Attachments

Eudora separates the e-mail message from the the attached file. It puts the attachment associated with the email into into a folder on the Hard Disk. By default they go into the C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Attach. You can change the location where attachments are stored by clicking on the raised button which has the location.

Getting Attention

Here you can decide how you want Eudora to notify you when new mail arrives.

Configuring Directory Services

If you want to use the search features of Eudora's Directory Services for finding someone's email address then go to this web page. http://www.education.ucsb.edu/itg/help/faq/directory.html

Deleting and Purging of Email Messages

1. When you delete a message it stay in the mailbox, but gets marked for deletion by a red "x" in its status column. Below is a sample of two messages that are marked for deletion.

2. To permanently remove these messages, go to the message menu..purge messages, shown below.

3. To undelete a message, click on it once and then go to the message menu..Undelete, shown below.

IMAP Mail Folders

In the Mailbox Menu , as show below, there are now two sets of mailboxes. The left column mailboxes are your local boxes that reside on your machine. The right column mailboxes (called <<Dominant>> in this example) are your IMAP mailboxes that reside on the server. All of your incoming mail will now arrive in the IMAP mailbox called INBOX .

All of the IMAP mailboxes are accessible from virtually anywhere there is a computer with an Internet connection and the proper web browser.

You can access your new IMAP mailboxes via GSE Web Mail or Eudora and always see a common set of IMAP mailboxes. Any IMAP mailboxes and messages that you delete, create, or organize will be synchronize with the other machines and methods you check your email account. This helps save you the time of reorganizing mail at every computer you use Eudora.

Problems with Mailboxes

If you have a problem with transferring, deleting, or mailbox problems in general then you should refresh and resyncronize each mailbox. To learn how to resyncronize a mailbox of refresh a list of IMAP Server mailboxes then visit the this page http://www.education.ucsb.edu/itg/help/faq/mail/refresh.resync.html
