Mosaic–UCEC Innovative Evaluation Research Award (IERA)

Co-Sponsored by Mosaic Network, Inc. and the UC Educational Evaluation Center

We are currently not accepting applications for the IERA.

Mosaic Network, Inc. is a leading provider of evaluation technology and services to the social service sector, including government agencies, NGOs and Community Based Organizations. Mosaic was founded in 2000 by graduates of UCSB doctoral programs in Computer Science and The Gevirtz School Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology (CCSP).

Mosaic Network, Inc. and the University of California Educational Evaluation Center (UCEC) are excited to co-sponsor the Mosaic–UCEC Innovative Evaluation Research Award (IERA) to encourage the use of evaluation research to improve the lives of families, individuals, and communities. The goal of the award is to support creative and innovative research aimed at making a difference in policy and practice. The IERA provides financial support to assist Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., M.A., M.Ed., and M.S. students scheduled to present evaluation research at peer-reviewed conferences.

IERA Recipients have presented at a range of professional conferences on educational evaluation.

IERA Guidelines

Eligibility: Applicants must be graduate students enrolled at any of the University of California campuses (Berkeley; Davis; Irvine; Los Angeles; Merced; Riverside; San Diego; San Francisco; Santa Barbara; and Santa Cruz). The applicant(s) must be presenting a paper, poster, or roundtable, or conducting a workshop/training, at a peer-reviewed conference. The work being presented must directly address at least one of the following: 1) the effective use of evaluation research to improve policy and/or practice; 2) the real-time use of data in evaluation efforts; and/or 3) the use of novel evaluation methods to improve program outcomes. Applicants can only receive the IERA once during their entire graduate student career. An applicant who did not receive the travel award is encouraged to reapply should their work be accepted to another conference.

Funding: The IERA provides applicants up to $800 to support the presentation of their work. These funds can be used for travel costs, up to 2 nights lodging, meal expenses (up to $100.00), poster printing, and/or conference registration fees for one conference. All expenses will initially be paid by the student(s). The awardee(s) will be reimbursed after the conference. To receive the reimbursement, awardees are required to submit an IERA Reimbursement Form accompanied by scanned copies of their original itemized receipts. Alcoholic beverages will not be reimbursed. Awardees are encouraged to find reasonable and economical lodging and transportation. Should the awardee’s actual costs be less than initially proposed in the application, the student(s) will only be reimbursed based on submitted receipts.

Application Materials and Instructions: Applicants must complete the IERA Application Form [pdf]. Both individual and group applications will be accepted. Detailed instructions are included on the application form. All materials should be emailed to the UC Educational Evaluation Center at ucec@education.ucsb.edu with a subject line of “IERA Application.”

A complete application includes:

    • IERA Application Form [pdf] and Itemized Budget;
    • Abstract (not to exceed more than one double-spaced page, using Times New Roman and a font size of 12).
    • Brief description of how presentation meets IERA research evaluation objectives (listed under “Eligibility”). In no more than one double-spaced page (using Times New Roman and a font size of 12), explain how your presentation reflects at least one of the aforementioned award objectives. Your narrative should be clearly written and understandable by a person outside your own area of specialty; and
    • Proof of acceptance to present at a conference (such as an email, letter, or program booklet from the conference).

Application Deadline: IERAs will be awarded on a rolling basis throughout the 2011–2012 academic year, or until funds are depleted. Students must apply at least 1 month prior to the conference.

Award Notification: Applicants will be notified by email when their complete application is received. Applicants will be contacted via email regarding their award status. Final decisions will be made by the UCEC director and the president of Mosaic. The entire process from submission to notification should take approximately 2–4 weeks.

Requirements of Awardees: When possible and if applicable, awardees should acknowledge that their presentation was supported by an Innovative Evaluation Research Award, co-sponsored by Mosaic Network, Inc. and the UC Educational Evaluation Center. Awardees are required to submit reimbursement materials and a copy of the work presented within 3 weeks after attending the conference. Failure to submit required materials on time can result in a revocation of the award.

Questions: If you have any questions, please call the UCEC at 805-893-7678 or email ucec@education.ucsb.edu with a subject line of “IERA Inquiry.”
