Overview

The Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) is proud to partner with Bowie State University (BSU) for the Pathways to the Professoriate in School Psychology Summer Research Program.

This 6-week hybridized summer research program is designed to expose up to 5 masters/specialist-level school psychology graduate students (or recent graduates) from Bowie State University to prospective academic careers in research and teaching.

The goals of the program are:
1) to facilitate the preparation of BSU students to pursue the Ph.D. degree
2) help develop scholars from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who may consider careers as school psychology faculty and researcher by providing opportunities to conduct research.

Through this engagement with the research projects of UCSB faculty mentors, fellows will gain valuable exposure to and research experience in areas that include school-based mental health, positive psychology and youth development, culturally and linguistically diverse students, and more . Program activities will also include workshops and seminars on the tools and skills essential for successful Ph.D. students, as well as networking events with UCSB faculty and graduate students. Students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to consider applying.

This program will consist of 3 major components, including:

● Immersive summer research program at the UCSB campus in close collaboration with UCSB faculty mentors and their labs. Totaling 6 weeks overall, the first 2 weeks will occur remotely with the remaining 4 weeks occurring in-person in Santa Barbara, CA. Additional programming will include a proseminar, career development workshops, and field trips to UC Riverside and UC Berkeley.

● Sustained mentorship and professional development throughout the academic year that, in collaboration with BSU faculty, will involve monthly workshops prior to and after the immersive on-campus experience. These workshops will begin inJanuary 2025, occur virtually, and provide topic coverage relevant to professorial careers in school psychology.

● Networking and dissemination of research through participation in and submission of scholarship to relevant professional conferences such as the National Association of School Psychologist and the Black School Psychology Network conferences.

This program’s on-campus activities will occur on July 1 through August 3. Interns will have the opportunity to work with one faculty mentor with potential to work with additional faculty mentors, contingent on faculty availability. All efforts will be made to place interns in their preferred lab(s) with available faculty mentors.

All fellows will receive a stipend of $4,000 and be provided free housing on campus with a meal plan. Travel expenses will also be covered.
