Teaching Practices Workshop

 

The goal of this workshop is to provide teachers with strategies for engaging their students in rigorous mathematical problem-solving experiences and investigations. It is intended for teachers in grades TK-12, with grade-level groupings at the workshop determined by participants' backgrounds.

Location: Canalino School, Carpinteria

Time: 8:30 am-3:30 pm Each Day

Registration Fee: $400 per person

Follow-Up Meeting #1: Tuesday, October 6, 2026

Follow-Up Meeting #2: Tuesday, January 26, 2027

 

Participants in this workshop will

  • Engage in rigorous mathematical sense-making activities.

  • Learn how to use teaching practices for orchestrating productive discourse in the mathematics classroom.

  • Demonstrate the use of routines for engaging students in mathematics problem-solving activities.

  • Visit classrooms (in follow-up meetings) to observe routines and problem-solving activities in practice with students.

  • Engage in conversations about current topics in mathematics education.

  • Be part of a community of developing, dynamic mathematics teachers.

Participant Responsibilities

  • Full participation in the workshop - four days in August 2026 plus two follow-up days in Academic Year 2026-27

  • A commitment to incorporate what is learned into everyday classroom practices

School or District Commitment

  • Registration fee of $400 per person and 2 days of release time, Academic Year 2026-27

  • A commitment to support the teacher in using these teaching practices in the classroom

This workshop is partially funded by the California Subject Matter Projects (CSMP).

The registration fee is $400 per person.

For an additional fee, participants may also earn 4 quarter units of course credit through UCSB Professional and Continuing Education.
