UC Santa Barbara’s Division of Student Affairs has appointed Joaquin Becerra—who is pursuing his doctorate in the Department of Education—Assistant Dean and Director of the Office of Judicial Affairs after a national search.

Becerra served in this role in an acting capacity for the 2017-18 year. He demonstrated his commitment to creating an equitable campus community for all students, excellence in managing sensitive matters on behalf of the campus, and skill in applying contemporary student conduct practices in order to promote student learning and behavior change.

An undergraduate alumnus of UC Santa Barbara, Becerra holds a master’s degrees in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University, Bloomington and in education from UC Santa Barbara. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in education at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education where his research interests include higher education, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and campus climate. His prior UCSB service includes manager of Residential Student Conduct, Assistant Director of Judicial Affairs, conduct officer, among others.

As such, the Office of Judicial Affairs’ mission is to maintain the integrity of the academic and co-curricular experience for all students and to ensure campus safety and security through the investigation and adjudication of University policy violations. Additionally, the Office is charged with assisting students in understanding the fundamentals of academic integrity and the rules and policies that govern behavior on campus.
