UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School has named Charlene Macharia the recipient of the 2022 Delaine A. Eastin Fellowship. This fellowship is given to a graduate student pursuing an MA or Ph.D. in the Department of Education who is the first in her family to attend grad school and show academic progress, with a preference for female students.
Charlene Macharia, a doctoral student in the Department of Education, was born and raised in Kenya where she experienced both private primary schooling as well as public secondary schooling before relocating to California in the middle of high school. She received the Gates Millennium Scholarship in her senior year and attended UCSB for her undergraduate studies. It was her cross-cultural educational journey that sparked her interest in the field of Education. After graduating with a B.A. in Psychology she then attended Antioch University Santa Barbara where she attained a M.A. in Education with an emphasis in Social Justice and Educational Leadership.
