Miya Barnett

Dr. Miya Barnett, Assistant Professor at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, will lead the free parenting workshop “Promoting Positive Behaviors With Play” at the Eastside Santa Barbara Public Library on Wednesday, November 6 from 11:15 am – 12 noon. Barnett will be teaching about positive play and will assist caregivers in gaining the skills to use this in their own interactions with children. Bring your child to practice these skills together. This is a small class best for caregivers and children whose ages fall between 3 and 5 years old. Online registration required.

Dr. Barnett specializes in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and she has provided PCIT training and consultation for a broad range of communities. She is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at UCSB and a licensed psychologist. She received her B.A. in Psychology and Hispanic Studies from Lewis & Clark College and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University.

Dr. Barnett’s research is focused on how implementation science can address mental health service disparities for ethnic minority children and families. She is specifically focused on how Lay Health Workers (LHWs) can be mobilized to increase access to evidence-based practices for underserved communities. She received a Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award from NIMH (K01MH110608; 2017-2021), which investigated how LHWs can increase engagement in PCIT for Latinx, immigrant families. Dr. Barnett has served as the Membership Chair for the Dissemination and Implementation Science Special Interest Group (DIS SIG) for the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (2016-2018) and is currently the leader of this group (2018-2020). She also serves as the Chair of the Advocacy and Policy Taskforce for PCIT International, which focuses on how to address barriers to implementation in community settings.
