The Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (Division 29 of the American Psychological Association) presents a Gab with the Greats virtual event designed for early career psychologists and students in the field of psychology on Friday, August 19, 12 – 1:30 pm (EDT) on Zoom. Two of the four panelists will be Heidi Zetzer, Teaching Professor at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, and alumnus Bruce Wampold, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The other two panelists are Carol Falender, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychology, and Charles Gelso, professor emeritus and senior lecturer in psychology at University of Maryland.
This event includes four accomplished psychotherapy researchers and practitioners who will share their knowledge and wisdom on various topics, with a specific focus on supervision and training. The presentation is jointly organized by the Early Career Psychology Domain and the Student Domain from the Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (Division 29 – APA).
The event is free for all; attendees do not need to be members of Division 29 to take part. Register in advance.
Dr. Heidi A. Zetzer is a Teaching Professor and Director of the Carol Ackerman Positive Psychology Clinic in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, & School Psychology at UCSB. She is the former director of the department’s psychology training clinic (2006-2020). Zetzer teaches Positive Psychology Across the Lifespan, The Psychology of Flourishing, Basic Practicum, and Theories of Supervision & Consultation. Zetzer is the Secretary for the Society for Counseling Psychology (SCP). She is a former chair of SCP’s Supervision & Training Section (STS) and former president of both the Association of Psychology Training Clinics (APTC) and the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association (SBCPA). She is a member of the editorial boards for The Counseling Psychologist, Psychotherapy, and Training & Education in Professional Psychology. She is Co-Editor of the APTC Bulletin: Practicum Education & Training. Zetzer’s areas of scholarship include parallel process in supervision, multicultural clinical supervision, white privilege and meaning in life. She co-chaired APTC’s International Committee with leadership from the Australasian Association of Psychology Training Clinics, which led to the production of The Guidelines for Psychology Training Clinics (2022). She received two SBCPA Legacy Awards and STS’s Outstanding Counselor Supervisor Award.
Dr. Bruce E. Wampold (Ph.D., Education [Counseling Psychology], 1981) was trained in mathematics (University of Washington) before earning his doctorate at UCSB. He is Emeritus Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison as well as Director, Research Institute at Modum Bad Psychiatric Center in Vikersund, Norway. Currently his work involves understanding psychotherapy from empirical, historical, and anthropological perspectives, which has led to the development of a contextual model of psychotherapy. His work is summarized in the volume Great Psychotherapy Debate (with Z. Imel, 2nd ed., Routledge, 2015). He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology, the recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research Award from the American Psychological Association, and an Honorary Doctor in the Social Sciences, Stockholm University. Wampold’s mentor at UCSB was Dr. Don Atkinson.
