Erika Luis Sanchez and Jazzmyn Ward were given the 2021-2022 Susan A. Neufeldt Award for Excellence in Clinical Supervision for their service at the Hosford Counseling and Psychological Services Clinic at UC Santa Barbara. The award is named in honor of a previous director of the Hosford Clinic.
Sanchez is a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology working under Dr. Miya Barnett. Sanchez earned her B.A in Psychology at California State University, San Marcos and M.A. in Psychology at San Diego State University. As an undergraduate student, she was a Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement Program (RISE) scholar; she is currently a Eugene Cota Robles scholar. Among her interests are the role that socio-cultural factors play on mental health disparities among at-risk minority children and families (including Spanish monolingual families), and finding innovative ways to contribute to closing the access and utilization of mental health services gap through research.
Ward is a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program working with Dr. Erika Felix. Prior to attending UCSB, she double majored in Psychology and Criminology with a minor in African American Studies at UC Irvine. Ward then went on to complete her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at California State University, Northridge where she studied community violence and ethnic racial socialization among marginalized populations. Broadly, she is interested in variations of trauma exposure and its effects on mental health among marginalized populations particularly in the Black community. Furthermore, Ward also has interests in resiliency and protective factors in addition to program development and program evaluation.
The Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic is a university-based community clinic that is designed to provide developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive, low-cost individual, couple, family, and group psychological treatment and testing/assessment services to people living within the central coast community. The Hosford Clinic serves as a training site for students in CCSP and as a clinical-research facility for the faculty and students of the CCSP Department. It also strives to provide educational, consultation, and training services to professional and paraprofessional clinicians and educators in the tri-counties.
