According to the UC Office of the President and UCSB campus policies, Block Grant funds are intended primarily to support the cost of attendance (i.e., tuition, fees, Gaucho Health Insurance, and non-resident supplemental tuition) for new and continuing students. Block Grants may also be used for stipends that can supplement other fellowships or employment.
To receive these awards, students must be continuously enrolled and remain in good academic standing. Student who have reached the P3 class level are not eligible for Block Grant funds. U.S. citizens and permanent residents awarded Block Grant support are required to have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file by March 2nd.
Continuing Students: Each year continuing students have an opportunity to apply for Block Grant funding to cover full fees for one quarter of the academic year (non-resident tuition not included). Students are required to complete the fellowship and funding survey in Winter quarter in order to be considered for funding for the following academic year.
First Year Students: Incoming students will be offered Block Grant funding as part of a financial package that is issued to them when they’re admitted to the program. CCSP is typically able to cover full fees and non-resident tuition (if applicable) for the first year of the doctoral program. There is no need for applicants to apply for these funds.
Block Grants for continuing students are awarded through an application process that takes place in April-May for the following academic year. Award decision are typically announced at the end of May/beginning of June and are made based on financial need, academic standing, employment, and various other factors. Award amount vary from $2500 to $13,000 based on need of student as assessed by the Education Fellowship Committee and available block grant funds in the current academic year.
