The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education offers three undergraduate minors: Educational Studies Minor, Applied Psychology Minor and Science and Mathematics Education Minor. In order to begin taking courses within the Educational Studies and Applied Psychology minors, you will need to complete and submit an application and be admitted to the minor. Completion and submission of a petition to declare the minor is required for the Science and Mathematics Education minor.

THE EDUCATIONAL STUDIES MINOR

This minor allows you to take the widest variety of courses that consider the needs of the learner from multiple perspectives. You can explore topics related to applied psychology, special education, afterschool programs, child development, teacher education, health education, and educational leadership. The practicum courses will give you hands-on experience in classrooms, after-school programs, and research projects. Through classroom and fieldwork experiences, you can start to consider a variety of careers in teaching, psychology, and educational research. This minor is also well suited to students who have other career objectives, but who want to understand the institution of education and its role in society.

THE APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY MINOR

Our mission is to provide UCSB undergraduates with high-quality courses that provide an overview of health service psychology (e.g., counseling, clinical, & school psychology), and applied behavioral health and wellness research across community and school settings.  Students have opportunities to be involved in the areas of excellence for which our CCSP department is known. This includes autism; school violence, school safety, and bullying; disaster mental health; helping skills; positive psychology; multicultural counseling; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues; and evaluation and improvement of community-based mental/behavioral health programs.

THE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION MINOR

This minor is for undergraduates who are considering mathematics or science teaching as a career. It includes two tracks. Students will only be granted the minor in one track. Each track has a slightly different set of required courses listed on the tracks' webpages.

  1. Elementary (Grades K-8) Track: Ths track is for undergraduates who are considering pursuing elementary teaching as a career.  It is for those prospective teachers who are interested in strengthening their understanding of mathematics and science education.
  2. Secondary (Grades 7-12) Track: This track is for STEM undergraduates who are considering pursuing secondary mathematics or science teaching as a career.   

Policies and Procedures

  • Our minors require a minimum of 20 to 26 upper division quarter units.
  • Students must receive a grade of C, P, or better in courses used towards our minors.
  • Students can take up to 5 units Pass/No Pass.
  • Students may apply up to 5 units of Independent Study (199 or 199RA) if applicable.
  • Only 5 units may overlap between a student’s major and minor, or between two minors.
  • As of July 2022, GGSE no longer allows students to double minor in Applied Psychology and Educational Studies.

Substitution Policy

Community college and other lower division courses may NOT be used as a substitution for any minor course. Six upper division quarter units can be transferred from another college or university besides UCSB if the units are approved by the course instructor and faculty advisor in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. Please be aware that UCSB Extension and UCEAP are considered outside institutions, and you may apply no more than six units from either program toward your minor.

Additional Information

It is the student’s responsibility to contact the GGSE Student Affairs Office by the Pass 2 of the final registration quarter before the degree/graduation is anticipated to certify fulfillment of degree requirements for the Office of the Registrar.

Students are encouraged to enroll in classes early as space is limited. There is a possibility that you will not be able to complete all courses due to popularity and space availability. 

Student Technology Fee

Initially, the Student Technology Fee (STF) will provide technological enhancements to school members. The STF will be assessed $2.50 per unit for the first 15 units of ED or CNCSP courses taken each quarter and will be charged automatically to students’ BARC accounts. The fee is officially assessed during the 3rd week of each quarter; thus, students who drop a course after the third week census will still incur the per-unit charge.
