Charlene Macharia, a student in the Gevirtz School’s Department of Education, is one of the panelists for UCSB’s “Global Voices: Africa” event to be presented by the Office of International Students & Scholars on Wednesday, October 11 from 12 noon – 1 pm in the Student Resource Building MultiPurpose Room. The event is free and open to the public. Macharia will be joined by Mhoze Chikowero, an Associate professor in the Department of History and Albert Chimedza, a visiting scholar in the Department of History for this scholars’ travelogue that will explore what it is like to be a student from another country in the U.S.
Charlene Macharia, a first year Ph.D. student in the Department of Education, was born and raised in Kenya where she experienced both private primary schooling as well as public secondary schooling before relocating to California in the middle of high school. She received the Gates Millennium Scholarship in her senior year and attended UCSB for her undergraduate studies. It was her cross-cultural educational journey that sparked her interest in the field of Education. After graduating with a B.A. in Psychology she then attended Antioch University Santa Barbara where she attained a M.A. in Education with an emphasis in Social Justice and Educational Leadership. She now works in the department of Student Affairs Academic Initiatives while furthering her studies at GGSE.
