Sarah A. Roberts (she/her) is an associate professor of mathematics education in the learning, teaching, and teacher education (LTTE) program area in the Department of Education. Her research examines mathematics education, social justice, professional learning, and multilingual learner students.
Roberts is especially interested in developing professional learning opportunities for mathematics teachers that create meaningful learning experiences for multilingual learner students — work performed in partnership with school districts and teachers. This work makes sense of teachers’, students’ and professional learning communities’ learning of how to better support multilingual learners in mathematics classrooms. Roberts is currently in the midst of a five-year NSF CAREER grant to study such work. Her research team collects and analyzes qualitative data to answer research questions focused on adaptive expertise as related to mathematical language routines (MLRs), and her research team includes undergraduate and graduate students.
Roberts completed her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Prior to her graduate work, she was a middle-school and high-school teacher and soccer coach in the Bay Area. She was previously an assistant Professor at Iowa State University.
