Dr. Kelly Edyburn, a 2019 alumna of the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology, has been appointed Assistant Professor in the School Psychology program at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Education in Illinois. Loyola School Psychology scholars collaborate with peers, faculty, and the community as they are trained to support students, parents, and educators. The program is based on the scientist-practitioner model and emphasizes ethics and social justice.
Edyburn earned her B.A. in English and Spanish from the University of Oregon. She received her M.Ed. and Ph.D. in School Psychology from UC Santa Barbara. After completing her internship at the Travis County Juvenile Probation Department in Austin, Texas, she began working as a postdoctoral research scholar at the Children’s Equity Project, an initiative of the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University that focuses on positive early learning experiences and education equity issues with the goal of ensuring all children are set up for long-term success and wellness and reach their full potential.
Edyburn strives for intersectional justice. Her work focuses on the developmental, mental health, and academic needs of marginalized children and families.
In 2006, Dr. Shane Jimerson, Professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (CCSP), envisioned and implemented the 2020 Doctoral Scholars Initiative—an effort to prepare at least twenty school psychology Ph.D. students, of whom 50% would be from historically underrepresented and/or marginalized groups, for faculty positions in the field of school psychology by the year 2020. Fourteen years later, the goal has already been surpassed as 30 CCSP alumni—including Dr. Edyburn—have earned academic faculty positions across the country.
