Lois Phillips, alumna of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, has been named the honored speaker for the Girls Inc. Celebrity Luncheon to be held October 30, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, at the Bacara Resort. In her talk Phillips will discuss the importance of women speaking up in leadership roles as well as “girls rising” in today’s uncertain world. Phillips says, “The fact that a 17-year-old girl won the Nobel Peace Prize is such an exciting indicator of the power of the spoken word.”
Girls Incorporated of Greater Santa Barbara celebrates more than 50 years as an affiliate of an almost 150 year old national non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Through educational, research-based programs, activities and advocacy, Girls Incorporated offers girls ages 4-1/2 to 18 years opportunities to experience success as they prepare to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Girls Inc. is a vigorous advocate for all girls and recognizes that girls today continue to experience the impact of past and continuing discrimination on the basis of gender. Because gender biases continue to play a pivotal role in shaping girls’ opportunities and expectations, it is necessary to provide girls with activities that break traditional patterns, foster leadership, and build self-confidence. Girls Inc. strongly believes that the special needs of girls can be most effectively addressed in an all-girl environment in which girls are encouraged take risks, acquire skills, gain confidence, become self-reliant, and practice leadership.
Lois Phillips, (Education Ph.D., ’87) is a dynamic public speaker whose clients say she “practices what she teaches.” Her academic background combines with executive experience to inform her training and coaching. Using principles gained from interviews with successful speakers and outlines in Women Seen and Heard: Lessons Learned from Successful Speakers, she provides coaching and training to spokespersons, managers, and executives. Phillips has a special interest in advancing women’s careers, companies, and board leadership and has produced conferences on women’s leadership, produced and moderated two television programs about women’s changing roles, and has years of conference presentations to complement her academic research. Phillips served as founder and first executive director of Antioch University Santa Barbara. She has presented her research at the JFK School, Babson’s Alumni Conference, UCSB, and elsewhere.
