Artist Jane Gottlieb has loaned selections of her work for display in the Education Building that houses UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School. For 18 months the artworks will hang in the entryways of the first floor, the fourth floor lobby, and the entrance area to the fourth floor administrative offices.
Ms. Gottlieb’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at many museums and is held in many public collections (including at UCLA, Brookings Institute, Carnegie Art Museum, Disney Art Collection). She has been written up in numerous art publications and major magazines. In conjunction with an exhibition of Gottlieb’s work at The Butler Institute of American Art, Dr. Louis A. Zona, director, called her power as a colorist “explosive” and stated, “These are classically beautiful works in theme and composition, but move well beyond tradition in interpretation and critical placement of color elements.”
Gottlieb began as a painter and evolved into a photographer, and then combined her two passions, turning to hand-painting on Cibachrome prints. “Now I scan my one-of-a-kind hand-painted prints, enhance them with Photoshop, and produce limited edition archival chromogenic prints,” she says on her website. For this exhibit, Gottlieb has printed her art on aluminum, a new and exciting archival digital medium. “Color is luscious to me. It’s a luxury to be able to fill my life with color. Color is energy; it evokes emotion and feelings, and it makes you feel good—it really does pick you up, and suddenly you are smiling.”
“This exhibit was kindly put on loan to us to brighten our building and provide focal points in some of our high traffic areas,” says Acting Dean Merith Cosden. “Ms. Gottlieb and her husband have been wonderful friends to the GGSE. We are excited to have this art.”
