Dean Jeffrey Milem

UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Henry T. Yang announced today the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Milem as the next Dean of the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, effective July 1, 2016.

"It is my honor to join the faculty, students, and staff of the Gervitz Graduate School of Education and the University of California, Santa Barbara," Dr. Milem says. "I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues to support the great work that the GGSE community does and to chart new paths where we come together to advance the mission of the School and UCSB. How lucky I am to be joining such great people and such a great institution.”

Dr. Milem has served as the Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professor in Leadership for Education Policy and Reform in the College of Education at the University of Arizona since 2008. He is also a Professor in the Center of the Study of Higher Education and Director of the Arizona Medical Education Research Initiative (AMERI) in the Colleges of Education and Medicine at the University of Arizona, in addition to holding a faculty position in the College of Medicine. Previously, Dr. Milem served as the College of Education’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and department head of Policy Studies and Practice. He is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education – the major professional research organization for scholars of higher education. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, he was Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland, College Park. He also held a faculty position in the Department of Educational Leadership at the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Milem’s research focuses on racial dynamics in higher education, the outcomes of campus diversity, the impact of college on students, and the condition and status of the professorate, including ways in which faculty effectively use diversity in their classroom teaching. Dr. Milem is a widely recognized expert in the area of racial dynamics in higher education. He is the author or co-author of seven books, 15 book chapters, and 25 articles on education issues, and has been the principal or co-principal investigator of 16 grants.
