The 2018 GGSE Grad Slam participants

Three Gevirtz School graduate students will take part in the School’s internal Grad Slam on April 2 and three students will participate in the 2019 UC Santa Barbara’s Graduate Student Showcase Grad Slam that runs from April 8-19. For both Grad Slam events, graduate students have the chance to tell the campus about their research or share their thoughts on big ideas that matter, in just a three-minute talk.

All the presentations are free and open to the public.

The Gevirtz School event will be Tuesday, April 2 in Education 4219 and begin at 12 noon. This slam is non-competitive and meant to help participants hone their skills. The presenters and their titles:

Melissa Gordon Wolf, “Survey Item Validation”
Christopher Salem, “Availability of Pediatric Dental Clinics in California”
Jing Yu, “Expectation Versus Reality: Challenges Facing Chinese International Undergraduates Enrolled in the U.S. University”

Eighty-four graduate students representing departments and programs all across campus are scheduled to compete in the campus-wide event. Creative presentations are welcome but all talks must include a live oral presentation and between one and three PowerPoint slides. This year Graduate Division will award more than $15,000 in cash and prizes. A full calendar of Graduate Student Showcase events is on-line.

It is especially good for Gevirtz School members to attend the preliminary rounds as they allow audience members to vote for the People’s Choice. Students, staff, faculty, and community members can select their favorite presenters who go on to join the Judge’s Choices at the semifinals. Help push our students through the process!
