Jeffrey Milem, Professor and Jules Zimmer Dean’s Chair at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, will be the featured guest on KCSB-FM’s new public affairs show “Schooled Radio” on Tuesday, October 20 from 10 – 10:30 am. Dean Milem will discuss a wide range of topics including what it’s like being dean during the COVID-19 pandemic and how UCSB and the Gevirtz School can take a lead in anti-racism efforts in education and the community.
This week’s episode of “Schooled Radio” is the new program’s second. Co-hosted by Gevirtz School alumna Chryss Yost (Ph.D., Education, ’18) and the Gevirtz School’s Director of Communications George Yatchisin, the weekly program examines how education is everywhere in Santa Barbara County. The program will include interviews with local teachers, students, and administrators on the topic of education in the broadest possible sense, from preschool to grad school and beyond. The program also plans to shine a light on the dozens of vibrant non-profit agencies focused on various aspects of education.

Dr. Milem came to UCSB in 2016. Before that he was the Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professor in Leadership for Educational Policy and Reform in the College of Education at the University of Arizona. Much of his research and academic career has focused on issues of access, social justice, and racial equity in higher education.
Chryss Yost has her Ph.D. in education from UCSB. She previously hosted Writers’ Cafe and Library Radio on KCSB. She has worked at UCSB for over 15 years: in the Center for Black Studies Research (where she was managing editor of the Journal of Haitian Studies), as an artist at the Library, and with international students and scholars.
She currently works at UCSB's Gevirtz School, where she is coordinating the development of a community resource center at Harding University Partnership School. She is a Santa Barbara Poet Laureate (2013-15) and is co-editor for Gunpowder Press. She is also the proud mother of a SBUSD alum.
George Yatchisin has been the Director of Communications for the Gevirtz School for 14 years. He has taught writing and public relations at UC Santa Barbara and Penn State. For 17 years he’s hosted programs on community radio on WJHU in Baltimore, KRUI in Iowa City, and KCSB in Santa Barbara. As a journalist he’s written for numerous publications across the country. He’s the co-author of a writing textbook (Writing for the Visual Arts), co-editor of a poetry anthology (Rare Feathers: Poems on Birds & Art), and author of two collections of poetry (Feast Days, The First Night We Thought the World Would End). He has an MA in poetry from the Johns Hopkins University, a MFA in poetry and a MA/W in nonfiction prose both from the University of Iowa.
