Dr. Steven Smith co-edits Personality Assessment, 2nd edition

Steven Smith of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School--along with Robert Archer, the Frank Harrell Redwood Distinguished Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences--has co-edited the new second edition of Personality Assessment (Routledge, 2014).

The first edition of Personality Assessment provided an overview of the most popular self-report and performance-based personality assessment instruments. The chapter authors were key members in creating or developing the research base for the eight test instruments covered in the book. The text was geared with graduate-level clinical, school, and counseling psychology courses in mind. While still retaining all the attractive features of the first edition, this revision reflects the advances in the field since 2008. Chapter contributors updated and expanded on reliability and validity data, clinical utility, multicultural considerations, and implications for therapeutic assessment. Another distinctive feature of this second edition is a companion website that features ancillary materials such as PowerPoints and test banks.

Steven R. Smith is Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training at UC Santa Barbara’s Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Arkansas in 2001 and completed a predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship in psychotherapy and neuropsychology from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He was a staff neuropsychologist at MGH until 2004 at which time he joined the faculty of UCSB. His research interests have included therapeutic assessment, neuropsychological assessment, and diversity issues in personality assessment. He turned his attention to the mental health needs of athletes in 2008 and served as the consulting psychologist to UCSB’s Division I Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in 2011-2012. He maintains a private practice in Santa Barbara where he works with athletes and those seeking healthier lifestyles.
