The Autism Seminar & Discussion (ASD) series – sponsored by UC Santa Barbara’s Koegel Autism Center and the Santa Barbara Public Library – will host another monthly lecture and Q&A on Tuesday, February 5th from 6:30-8 p.m. The talk, given by three graduate researchers at the Clinic, is titled “Keeping Your Cool: Coping Skills for Children, Parents, & Teens.” This free, public presentation, which will be held at the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Faulkner Gallery, focuses on the transition of autistic children into adulthood.
This presentation will focus on learning and practicing coping skills that can be used throughout the day to help keep your cool in the face of stressful situations. Come join us as we discuss how to handle the difficult emotions that many of us experience every day. Drawing from the latest research and our clinical experience, we will share resources and strategies that can help people of all ages learn to cope with challenging feelings. The discussion will include the role of emotions in our lives, how the emotional and logical brain develops over time, and how to identify healthy coping strategies. We will also discuss tools for parents to help their children learn to manage their own emotions.
The presentation will be given by Shereen Cohen, Elizabeth McGarry, and Emily Ferguson, three doctoral candidates in the Department of Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology at UC Santa Barbara.
The monthly Autism Seminar & Discussion (ASD) Program is made possible through collaboration between UCSB’s Koegel Autism Center and the Santa Barbara Library to bring highly engaging and informative content to the local community. It will take place the first Tuesday of each month during the academic school year.
