The South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP) is pleased to announce its 21st Annual Young Writer’s Camp (YWC). This premier learning experience begins July 15th on the campuses of UC Santa Barbara, Cal Lutheran University, Oxnard College, and Ventura College. YWC is a nurturing and stimulating environment where writing skills are maximized through creative activities. SCWriP is currently accepting applications for the program. Depending upon on the site, camps are for students from grades 3-9 or 4-9 and the program runs to either July 26 or August 1.
One parent of a student participant says about past camps, “My daughter loved the diversity, all the different forms of writing and getting to meet authors, which puts a face to the book and writing. It has inspired her to write more and even say she wants to be an author.” Another parent adds, “It gave our son, who loves to write, the opportunity to get creative writing instruction that does not really exist at the schools.”
Meanwhile students who have participated say, “I like how we did different exercises everyday,” and, “I liked letting my imagination run wild in writing.” Another participant summed things up, “I liked the passion that everyone has about writing. I wanted to be in a place where everyone likes writing. That is what I found in Young Writer’s Camp.”
As an affiliated site of the National Writing Project (NWP) and the California Writing Project (CWP), SCWriP seeks to transform the teaching of writing and literacy and strives to be a model of professional learning, teacher leadership, and reform. The program does this by working with teachers, schools, districts, students, and families. SCWriP is housed in the Gevritz School at UC Santa Barbara.
