UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School will hold an information meeting for students interested in the CalTeach Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science (STEM) program on Friday, February 19th at 12 noon in Room 4606, Physical Sciences Building North. The event will feature exceptional UCSB undergraduates, UCSB faculty, and local STEM teachers talking about minors in both elementary and secondary science, paid undergraduate internships in classroom and scholarship opportunities to attend UCSB’s Teacher Education Program. There will also be free pizza.
The purpose of UCSB’s CalTeach program is to provide opportunities for STEM undergraduates to explore secondary science and mathematics teaching as a career, and to better prepare these beginning teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners in California’s public schools. Starting this year, the Science and Mathematics Education minor has two tracks, for either elementary or secondary education. CalTeach supports two National Science Foundation Noyce Teacher Scholarship Programs for STEM teacher candidates in UCSB’s Teacher Education Program: CTPSE and STELLER. The Noyce CalTeach Physical Sciences and Engineering (CTPSE) program, funded by the National Science Foundation, provides internship opportunities for undergraduates pursuing majors in chemistry, engineering, computer science, and physics to explore teaching as a career. The Noyce STEM Teachers for English Language Learners: Excellence and Retention (STELLER) award funded by the National Science Foundation is available for students seeking a secondary credential in mathematics or science. Scholars will focus on ways to effectively teach mathematics and science to English Language Learners (ELLs).
Students can also receive mentoring if pursuing the Undergraduate Minor in Science and Mathematics Education and/or applying to a teacher education program.
