The Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School presents Dr. Stephen Brady’s lecture “Opportunities and Challenges for Embracing the Scientist-Practitioner Life” on Friday, November 6 at 12 noon in Education Building 1213. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Brady, an alumnus of UC Santa Barbara, is Director of the Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine Program at Boston University’s School of Medicine. Brady will offer a unique perspective, as this program is the only clinical mental health counseling program in the United States housed in a medical school. In his presentation, Dr. Brady will talk about his scholarship, his practice, and his academic journey.
Dr. Brady received his B.A. in Sociology from the University of Florida in Gainesville and his M.A. and Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara. He has been a member of the Counselor Education Faculty at Boston University School of Medicine for over 20 years. For the past 12 years he has served as the Director of the Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine Program as well as an associate professor of psychiatry and graduate medical sciences. He is the current Chair-Elect of the faculty at Boston University. He is also the past chair of the American Mental Health Counseling Association’s Professional Development Committee and past Chair of the APA Counsel on AIDS. He is an active clinician who primarily counsels gay men. His research interest has focused on HIV and serious mental disorders where he has led or been part of several federally funded projects. He is currently the principal investigator for an NIH R01 study for 2010-2015 examining motivational approaches for HIV prevention for mentally ill and homeless adults.
