Audrey Harkness and Ana Thomat

Audrey Harkness and Ana Thomat, doctoral students at the Gevirtz School at UC Santa Barbara, have been given Susan A. Neufeldt Awards for Excellence in Clinical Supervision for 2013-14. These awards are for service they performed at the Hosford Counseling and Psychological Services Clinic at UC Santa Barbara. The award is named in honor of a previous director of the Clinic.

In a nomination letter, a co-worker claimed Harkess, “Carefully and thoughtfully responds to supervisees’ needs, maintaining a balance between fostering their own growth and being directive when necessary.” In a letter supporting her nomination, a colleague wrote of Thomat, “She facilitates a warm and empathetic atmosphere and provides astute and relevant feedback regarding professional standards, risk management, case presentations and self-care issues.”

Audrey Harkness, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology studying with her advisor Dr. Tania Israel, worked as a student supervisor in the Hosford Clinic for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Her clinical and research interests include LGBT mental health, gender issues, and social justice and advocacy.

Ana Thomat, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology studying with her advisor Dr. Merith Cosden, worked as the clinic coordinator in the Hosford Clinic for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Her clinical and research interests include personality traits in relation to trauma and developmental trajectories of antisocial behaviors.
