Heidi Zetzer of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, during a sabbatical from fall 2015 until spring 2016, conducted extensive research and study, highlighted by an appointment as a Visiting Scholar and hosted by Dr. Clara E. Hill in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland during the fall 2015. While at UMD, Zetzer initiated a qualitative study with Drs. Hill and Mary Ann Hoffman on parallel process in psychodynamic supervision. She also joined Dr. Hill’s research team, which is developing a measure of the Meaning in Life (MIL). Zetzer will present her contribution to the MIL project as part of a symposium that was accepted by the North American Society for Psychotherapy Research for its conference in November 2016.
Over the year, Zetzer visited 18 training clinics and met with at least 6 other applied psychology training clinics (APTC) colleagues at central locations. The purpose of these visits and consultations was to learn about the services that a sample APTC training clinics provide, to understand the breadth of those services, and to learn how to increase training opportunities for our students and revenue for UC Santa Barbara’s Hosford Clinic by implementing some of the APTC clinics’ best practices.
During that time Zetzer gave 12 presentations and continued to work on research, writing, and teaching. Specifically, she revised a chapter on white privilege in preparation, “White Out: Privilege and Its Problems,” for the third edition of Explorations in Diversity: Examining Privilege and Oppression in a Multicultural Society, edited by S. K. Anderson & V.A. Middleton.
Heidi Zetzer is a Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE) in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (CCSP) and the Director of the Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic, which is the department’s psychology training clinic. The Hosford Clinic provides affordable evidence-based culturally-responsive mental health services to members of the Santa Barbara community. In addition to running the clinic, Dr. Zetzer teaches practicum and supervision courses, supervises student clinicians and supervisors, and provides psychotherapy to community clients. She also provides continuing education programs on positive psychology, evidence-based practice, cultural competence, and supervision.
Zetzer has held numerous board positions in local and national professional associations. She is a Past-President of the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association (SBCPA) and has also served as SBCPA Secretary, Treasurer, and Representative to the California Psychological Association. She is currently President-Elect for the Association of Psychology Training Clinics and Chair-Elect for the Supervision & Training Section (STS) of the Society for Counseling Psychology (SCP). She served as Communications Officer for STS from 2011-2013. Zetzer served as the Co-Coordinator of Media and Public Relations for the Society of Counseling Psychology, a division of the American Psychological Association, from 2008-2010.
In 2014, Dr. Zetzer received the Outstanding Counseling Supervisor Award from the Supervision & Training Section of the Society for Counseling Psychology. She received SBCPA Legacy Awards in 2014 and 2011 in honor of her service to SBCPA and the community.
