Heidi Zetzer

Heidi Zetzer, director of the Hosford Counseling and Psychological Services Clinic at the Gevirtz School at UC Santa Barbara, will be presented with an Award for Outstanding Counseling Supervisor from the Supervision & Training Section of the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17), which is part of the American Psychological Association (APA). The award will be presented at the section business meeting at the upcoming APA Conference in Washington, DC.

The Supervision and Training Section (STS) of the Society of Counseling Psychology is dedicated to those interested or engaged in training or supervising mental health service providers, including students, professional therapists-counselors, psychologists, and clinical supervisors. Specifically, the Section strives to promote multi-culturally sensitive research, teaching, practice, as well as public interest in therapist training, clinical supervision, and supervisor training.

“There are three good things about receiving this award,” Zetzer says. “First, all the tremendous gratitude I feel for the colleagues and former students who wrote letters of support. Thank you for your recommendations! Second, it’s an honor to be acknowledged by the STS board. This group is comprised of incredibly talented people in the field of supervision and training, so it’s especially meaningful to get a thumbs-up from them. Third, this experience reminds me of all of the awesome students I have supervised: Many of them are now licensed professionals who are supervisors themselves or in academic positions in which they are training future applied psychologists.”

Heidi Zetzer is a Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE) in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (CCSP) and the Director of the Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic, which is the department’s psychology training clinic. The Hosford Clinic provides affordable evidence-based culturally-responsive mental health services to members of the Santa Barbara community. It includes three centers: 1) The Carol Ackerman Positive Psychology Clinic, 2) The Trauma Recovery & Resilience Center, and 3) the Psychology Assessment Center. In addition to running the clinic, Dr. Zetzer teaches practicum and supervision courses, supervises student clinicians and supervisors, and provides psychotherapy to community clients. She also provides continuing education programs on positive psychology, evidence-based practice, cultural competence, and supervision. Dr. Zetzer earned an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Ohio State University in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1990.
