Kristina N. Esopo and Corinna Klein of the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School were given 2019-20 Ray E. Hosford Awards for Excellence in Professional Behavior for their service at the Hosford Counseling and Psychological Services Clinic.
Esopo is a counseling psychology doctoral student working with Dr. Tania Israel. She specialized in biopsychology at The College of New Jersey, where she received her bachelor’s degree. She served as a tutor and mentor with City Year, an AmeriCorps program, and has worked at Princeton University as a research specialist, examining the effects of stress on health behaviors. She focuses on applying an intersectional lens to understand the lived experiences and mental health needs of diverse LGBTQ+ people. She is also interested in employing social justice research frameworks, such as community-based participatory research, to develop and implement community-based mental health interventions.
Klein is a clinical psychology doctoral student working with Dr. Miya Barnett. She received her bachelor’s degree from UCSB and a master’s degree from UCLA, where she specialized in school social work. She has worked in a residential treatment center for women with chemical dependency and histories of trauma exposure and in an acute care hospital as a medical social worker. She aims to decreasing disparities in access to effective mental health treatment. Her research interests include the implementation and dissemination of mental health services as well as clinician attitudes towards evidence-based treatments.
The Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic is a university-based community clinic that is designed to provide developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive, low-cost individual, couple, family, and group psychological treatment and testing/assessment services to people living within the central coast community. The Hosford Clinic serves as a training site for students in CCSP and as a clinical-research facility for the faculty and students of the CCSP Department. It also strives to provide educational, consultation, and training services to professional and paraprofessional clinicians and educators in the tri-counties.
